Building Futures: Cardo and Cardiff Commitment Transforming Education
As part of our ongoing partnership with Cardiff Commitment, Cardo is proud to collaborate with local schools, including Cardiff West High School (CWHS), to support meaningful educational initiatives. Through this partnership, we’re providing Year 10 students (ages 14-15) with invaluable industry insights into the world of construction.
The Cardiff Commitment team invited us to participate in a project designed to give CWHS students hands-on exposure to the construction industry. This initiative featured a range of activities aimed at guiding students through different stages of a construction project’s lifecycle, showcasing the variety of career opportunities in our field.
To kick off, Cardo’s Health & Safety (H&S) team led an in-class session, delivering a workshop that highlighted the essential role of H&S in construction. Through this workshop, students learned about both the potential hazards of the industry and the rewarding career pathways within H&S.
Following this, students visited one of our construction sites in its early stages, featuring a timber-framed structure. This site tour allowed them to witness foundational aspects of building homes and understand the environmental considerations that go into each project, including the impact on local ecosystems and wildlife.
In a subsequent career pathways session, our Training and Sustainability Manager, who began his career as an apprentice plumber and advanced into management, shared his personal journey. A long-standing client with 40 years in construction also shared insights, underscoring that opportunities in the industry extend beyond trades to fields like accounting, HR, training, and Health & Safety, with skills that transfer across sectors.
During a final site visit, students were given a practical task: to identify and report any issues in a nearly completed property, viewing it through a client’s lens before handover. This exercise highlighted their grasp of quality assurance and attention to detail.
Cardo supplied all necessary PPE for the students and donated work boots for their future projects. A CWHS teacher remarked:
“The chance to witness real-life construction projects and explore career pathways has been invaluable in helping our students consider their next steps after Year 11.”
Cardo has been proud to work alongside Cardiff Commitment for many years, welcoming the opportunity to support local communities where we live and work. This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering social value and fostering educational opportunities for young people.
