School Insight Day
As part of its commitment to supporting young people and promoting career awareness, Cardo partnered with Learning to Work, a not-for-profit organisation, to host a School Insight Day for 20 students from Langley Academy.
The Challenge
Many young people have limited exposure to the range of career opportunities available within the housing, repairs and maintenance sector. The Insight Day aimed to provide students with a practical understanding of the industry, introduce them to workplace environments, and encourage them to think about how local services contribute to stronger communities.
What We Did
The event was hosted at Cardo’s premises and delivered with support from Cardo colleagues Barrie, Tom, Duncan and Paul.
Throughout the day, students participated in a series of engaging and interactive activities, including:
- An introduction to the history and work of Cardo
- A ‘Cardo Bingo’ icebreaker activity
- A health and safety ‘Spot the Danger’ quiz
- Demonstrations on identifying electrical faults
- An insight into a typical day in the life of a repairs operative
To encourage teamwork and creative thinking, students were also invited to take part in the Cardo Trophy Challenge, answering the question:
“How can Cardo improve our communities?”
Working in groups, students developed and presented their ideas to a judging panel, with the winning team receiving a Cardo Trophy.
Outcomes and Impact
The Insight Day provided students with valuable exposure to the housing and repairs sector while developing their confidence, communication and presentation skills.
Key outcomes included:
- Engagement of 20 students from Langley Academy
- Increased awareness of careers within housing, repairs and maintenance
- Development of teamwork, problem-solving and presentation skills
- Enhanced understanding of health and safety in the workplace
- Strengthened links between Cardo, local schools and community partners
To recognise their participation, all students received a certificate of attendance and a personalised Cardo keyring. Additional prizes were awarded throughout the day to encourage engagement and participation.
