Making Breakaway House Safe – Fence Panel 14
As part of Cardo’s ongoing work to transform Breakaway House into a safe, welcoming and engaging space for children, we have been working through several improvements to the garden and outdoor areas.
One of the latest jobs involved fitting Fence Panel 14, following the removal of a large tree that had previously occupied the space.
The Challenge
Once the tree had been removed, a new fence panel was needed to close the gap and make the garden secure.
Unfortunately, when the panel arrived, it was not quite the right size.
Volunteers had already made several attempts to reduce the size of the panel by chipping away at it, but without the right tools and equipment, it was proving difficult to get the panel to fit properly.
This was more than just making the fence look tidy. The gap needed to be closed securely to make sure the children at Breakaway House could enjoy the garden safely without finding their own little escape route!
What We Did
A call to action was put out to Cardo’s operatives, and Anil and Owen were quick to step in.
They attended the site and used their skills and equipment to professionally plane the fence panel down to the required size.
The panel was then fitted snugly into place, closing the gap and creating a secure boundary around the garden.
The Impact
What could have become a frustrating problem was quickly resolved thanks to the skills and willingness of Cardo’s operatives to get involved.
The completed fence panel:
- Closed the gap left after the tree was removed.
- Improved the security of the garden.
- Reduced the risk of children slipping through the gap.
- Allowed the garden improvements at Breakaway House to continue.
- Demonstrated how Cardo’s operational skills can make a direct difference to a community project.
Most importantly, it means the children can continue to enjoy their outdoor space without us having to worry about them discovering an unexpected new adventure route through the fence!
Partnership & Teamwork
This was a great example of how Cardo colleagues, volunteers and community partners can work together to solve practical problems.
While volunteers had done everything they could with the tools available, Anil and Owen were able to use their professional skills and equipment to finish the job properly.
Social Value Created
This small job has contributed to the wider transformation of Breakaway House, helping to create a safe, secure and stimulating outdoor environment for children.
It demonstrates that social value is not always about large projects. Sometimes, it is about seeing a problem, getting the right people involved and using our skills to make a difference.
