From Work Experience to Apprenticeship – Jack’s Journey
In April 2026, Cardo welcomed Jack through our partnership with ITEC, providing him with an opportunity to gain practical experience within the construction industry while continuing to work towards his GCSEs.
ITEC supports young people through education, training and employment pathways, helping learners develop the skills, confidence and experience they need to progress into further education or employment. For Jack, the placement provided an opportunity to explore the construction sector at a time when he was unsure about which career path he wanted to pursue.
Having previously tried other work experience placements, Jack joined Cardo with an open mind and a willingness to see where the opportunity could take him. He has since been working on our Special Projects sites, gaining hands-on experience across a number of commercial projects under the guidance of Trev Blake, Operations Manager, and Louise Lovelock, Assistant Contracts Manager.
Throughout his placement, Jack has demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm and a genuine willingness to learn. He has faced and overcome a number of barriers and challenges during his time with us, showing resilience, commitment and a positive attitude. His progress has been particularly encouraging given that he initially wasn’t sure what direction he wanted to take.
His hard work and attitude have now led to an exciting next step. Jack has been offered an apprenticeship with Cardo starting in September, where he will study for a Level 3 Carpentry qualification at Cardiff and Vale College, alongside gaining valuable on-the-job experience with our teams.
Jack’s journey is a fantastic example of how providing young people with a chance to experience the workplace can help unlock potential. What began as a placement for someone unsure of his future direction has developed into a clear career pathway, with Jack now taking his first steps towards a career in carpentry.
His story highlights the importance of partnership working with organisations such as ITEC and education providers, creating opportunities that allow young people to build confidence, overcome barriers and progress into sustainable employment and training.
