Discovering New Career Pathways Through Work Experience

Heidi recently completed a work experience placement at Cardo’s Cardiff Head Office, gaining an insight into different areas of the business and discovering career opportunities she had not previously considered.

Before starting her placement, Heidi was preparing to study Journalism, English Literature and Media, with an initial interest in Marketing. She hoped her work experience would give her a better understanding of how a business operates; how different teams work together and potentially introduce her to an area of work she had not previously considered.

Her placement provided exactly that opportunity. Heidi spent time across several departments, including HR, Recruitment, Social Value and Sustainability, giving her a broad understanding of the different roles within Cardo. She also joined Gary Jones, Site Manager, on a visit to our Retrofit site in St Bride’s Major, giving her an opportunity to see the operational side of the business first-hand.

During her time with Cardo, Heidi developed a particular interest in HR, an area she had not originally identified as a career path. She also spent time with our Recruitment Lead, Jordan Thomas, who provided advice on her CV and supported her in updating and strengthening it.

The experience gave Heidi the confidence to take the next step. She subsequently applied for an open position within our HR department and is now looking to undertake further work experience with the team over the summer.
Heidi’s placement is a great example of how meaningful work experience can help young people explore different career options, develop their confidence and identify opportunities they may not have previously considered. What started as an opportunity to learn more about business and marketing has opened the door to a potential future career in HR.
