Community Spirit and Wildlife Thrive at Longfield Court
When residents at Longfield Court in Canterbury spotted hedgehogs exploring their communal garden, they had a simple request for us at Cardo: a hedgehog house to offer their prickly visitors a safe home.
We were happy to help. At a recent community coffee morning, our team arrived with a handmade hedgehog house, flat-packed bird boxes crafted from recycled materials, and a few extra treats for the table.
The event quickly became a hands-on gathering. Residents and their visiting grandchildren built and decorated the bird boxes, supported by our work experience placement student Deacon, who assisted with drill work and setup.
By the end of the morning, the garden had a new hedgehog house and a collection of colourful bird boxes ready for installation.
James Dougall, Operations Director at Cardo (South & Central), said:
“A simple request turned into a day of sharing stories, building bird boxes, and boosting wellbeing through a relaxed, hands-on activity that brought people together.
We’re always looking for meaningful ways to connect with our local communities, and this was a great opportunity to contribute with a small gesture that will bring joy to the residents – and local wildlife – at Longfield Court.”
