Bringing the Breakaway Wildflower Meadow to Life Through Community Art
As part of the ongoing transformation of Breakaway House, Cardo worked alongside staff and young residents to create a beautiful wildflower meadow, providing a colourful, calming outdoor space that promotes biodiversity while offering sensory benefits for the children.
After months of care and attention from the young residents, the meadow began to flourish, bursting into colour and becoming a wonderful feature within the garden. However, located behind a large fence, it lacked the visual impact and recognition it deserved.
Identifying the Opportunity
To celebrate the success of the meadow and further enhance the outdoor environment, Cardo explored the idea of creating a nature-inspired mural featuring wildflowers, butterflies and insects. The mural would provide an attractive backdrop to the meadow, extending the sensory experience and creating a vibrant feature for the children and visitors to enjoy.
Finding an artist willing to volunteer their time, however, presented a challenge.
Creating Community Connections
Whilst attending a community event in Cippenham, I met local face painter and aspiring mural artist, Tracy. Initially, our conversation centred around providing face painting at future community events, and I took her contact details to share with event organisers.
As we continued talking, Tracy mentioned her ambition to begin painting large-scale murals. It quickly became clear that her passion aligned perfectly with the vision for Breakaway House.
Recognising the opportunity, I arranged a meeting between Tracy and the Breakaway House team to discuss how her artistic talents could contribute to the transformation project.
Expanding the Project
Following the visit, Tracy generously committed to volunteering her time and creativity to deliver not just one mural, but several enhancements throughout the home.
In addition to creating a vibrant wildflower mural overlooking the meadow, Tracy also proposed:
- A calming underwater-themed mural featuring sea creatures within the children’s wet room.
- A bespoke mural within one of the children’s bedrooms.
- Future artwork to continue enhancing the environment throughout the home.
Her enthusiasm and commitment transformed what began as a single idea into a wider creative project that will have a lasting impact on the children who use the service.
Making Every Donation Count
The materials for the murals were funded through a generous £120 donation from Neal Allison, who kindly donated the proceeds from a workplace sweepstake to support the Breakaway House transformation.
Originally, the donation had been considered for purchasing a water feature. However, following consultation with the Breakaway House team, it was agreed that investing in painting materials would deliver greater long-term value by enabling multiple murals to be created throughout the home.
As Tracy is generously volunteering her artistic talent free of charge, any remaining paint will be retained by her to support future voluntary community art projects, ensuring the donation continues to create social value beyond Breakaway House.
