Cardo completes additional refurb work for charity Wheels for All
Wheels for All is a local inclusive cycling charity, their work ensures that disabled people and those with long‑term health conditions can access and enjoy cycling. Wheels for All runs weekly sessions in Kingston, providing adapted cycles and specialist support that enable people of all ages and abilities to cycle in a safe and welcoming environment. The charity focuses on improving physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence and social inclusion, while working in partnership with local authorities, schools and community organisations to make cycling accessible to everyone.
A team of alliance staff completed an initial refurb project over a two-day period in September 2025. This initial work included treating and protecting the external wood of the charity’s storage facility as it was discoloured and beginning to warp due to exposure to the elements, the ramp was also badly degraded and needed complete removal and replacement. All four sides of the five by three-meter shed were treated with excellent quality weather shield wood stain to prolong its life. A new concrete ramp was constructed to replace the old wooden one and withstand the weight of the especially adapted bikes while being more resistant to the elements in the coming years.
Following on from this initial refurb work, Donnali Anne-Skura – Transformation Project Manager at RBK highlighted additional remedial work that could be undertaken to improve the facility further. These included a new guttering system to be fitted, the ramp coated with a protective paint to protect the newly laid concrete from the elements and a small lip to be removed to allow for easier access, the door to be reinforced as some of the wood panels warped significantly.
Cardo and supply chain partner Yanakos construction undertook the additional work on the storage facility to achieve the expected improvements. A new guttering system was installed to draw and redirect rain away from the wood panels, the concrete ramp was painted with a weather resistant paint and the small lip smoothed out, the door to the facility was reinforced with rigid wood blocks to prevent further warping and help it regain its original shape over time.
