Cornwall Housing, CCS and Looe Valley Plants to deliver a community planting day
Cardo recently partnered with Cornwall Housing, CCS and Looe Valley Plants to deliver a community planting day at Wyndhurst Orchard Gardens Residential Home, helping to transform outdoor spaces and create meaningful opportunities for residents to engage with nature.
Following earlier visits to the home, Cardo identified an opportunity to repurpose the site’s former pond features into attractive raised planters that could be more easily enjoyed and maintained by residents. To support the long-term success of the transformation, Cardo arranged for drainage improvements to be completed ahead of the planting day, ensuring the beds were ready for new planting.
Despite challenging wet and rainy conditions, two Cardo employees joined volunteers from Cornwall Housing and CCS to spend the morning planting a variety of shrubs and seasonal plants into the newly prepared beds. The outdoor planting was supported by a donation of materials from Travis Perkins, helping to bring the project to life and maximise its impact for residents.
Recognising the importance of ensuring all residents could get involved, regardless of the weather, Cardo also arranged and funded an indoor activity delivered by local specialists Looe Valley Plants. Residents took part in a terrarium-making workshop, creating their own miniature gardens while learning about different plants and enjoying a fun, interactive session.
CCS and Cornwall Housing supported the day through volunteering, while CCS also kindly provided refreshments for volunteers and residents, helping to create a welcoming and sociable atmosphere throughout the event.
The project highlights Cardo’s commitment to creating lasting social value in the communities we serve. By leading the initiative, coordinating partners, funding the resident activity and investing in the preparatory works, Cardo helped create a more vibrant, accessible and enjoyable environment for residents. The newly planted raised beds will continue to brighten the gardens for months to come, while the terrariums provide residents with a lasting reminder of a day spent learning, creating and connecting with others.
